SEEG in a child with focal cortical dysplasia: is it safe?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Case presentation: Male, 6 years old, presenting seizures since the age of 4 and evolving with refractory epilepsy, in use several medications for focal seizures, including Lacosamide, Cannabidiol, Phenobarbital Sulthiame. A 24-hour electroencephalogram showed bursts bilateral sharp waves front rolandic region, no adequate localization epileptogenic zone. Resonance imaging examination revealed a right lesion compatible cortical dysplasia close to motor strip. Patient was submitted stereoEEG (SEEG) evaluation, deep electrodes implanted left frontal region. After mapping patient lesionectomy became seizure free.

Focal cortical dysplasia – review

Focal cortical dysplasia is a malformation of cortical development, which is the most common cause of medically refractory epilepsy in the pediatric population and the second/third most common etiology of medically intractable seizures in adults. Both genetic and acquired factors are involved in the pathogenesis of cortical dysplasia. Numerous classifications of the complex structural abnormalit...

Focal Cortical Dysplasia.

Focal cortical dysplasias are common malformations of cerebral cortical development and are highly associated with medically intractable epilepsy. They have been classified into neuropathological subtypes (type Ia, Ib, IIa, IIb, and III) based on the severity of cytoarchitectural disruption--tangential or radial dispersion, or loss of laminar structure--and the presence of unique cells types su...

Ictal bradycardia in a young child with focal cortical dysplasia in the right insular cortex.

We report on a three and a half year old child with episodic sinus bradycardia during habitual seizures and prolonged interictal discharges due to focal cortical dysplasia in the anterior 2/3 of the insula and the inferior frontal cortex. Seizure-induced bradycardia is rarely reported in children. Bradycardia is suspected to be related to sudden death, a rare complication of a chronic seizure d...

Cerebral palsy and seizures in a child with tubulinopathy pattern dysgenesis and focal cortical dysplasia

A 7-year-old boy with a history of spasticity, global developmental delay, and seizures was given the general diagnosis of cerebral palsy at an early age. Chromosomal array analysis performed at an outside center was normal. The patient's family sought neurodevelopmental pediatric care at a new institution following a move out of state. Electroencephalography confirmed abnormal epileptogenic ac...

Cortical development and focal cortical dysplasia.

A brief survey of cortical development is presented, focusing on neuronal migration and its alterations. Corticogenesis is achieved through ordered temporospatial steps, via the formation of transient structures, and successive waves of cell proliferation and migration (followed by cell differentiation and maturation), and apoptotic cell death. The appearance of the proliferative ventricular zo...
